Please join us for the European premiere of Cosmic Portal – Exploring Mahler’s
“Symphony of a Thousand”, the latest documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Jason Starr,
narrated by Alec Baldwin. This groundbreaking film offers a profound look into one of
the most ambitious works in classical music: Gustav Mahler’s Eighth Symphony.
Filmed across Austria, Germany, Estonia, and the United States, Cosmic Portal traces
the musical, philosophical, and biographical roots of Mahler’s “Symphony of a
Thousand”, a work so monumental it required one-thousand musicians at its premiere.
Mahler once said this symphony made “all my others seem like preliminary efforts” and
asks his audience to “imagine that the universe begins to ring and resound. No longer
with human voices but with revolving planets and suns.”
The film interweaves dramatizations, dance, animation, and commentary from world-
renowned Mahler scholars. At its core a specially filmed performance conducted
by Neeme Järvi, brings Mahler’s cosmic vision to life. Part 1 evokes the primal creative
energy of the universe; Part 2 sets to music the final scene of Goethe’s Faust, revealing
a mystical journey of transformation.
